Popcorn Popcorn lung, also known as bronchiolitis obliterans, is a type of lung disease typically caused by the chemical diacetyl. First introduced to the United States market in the 1980s, diacetyl was considered to be a safe artificial food flavoring. Used in dairy products, caramel, butterscotch, and microwave popcorn, it was popular for its ability to reproduce the golden flavor that naturally results from browning foods. It was not until years after its implementation when employees at microwave popcorn factories were found to be afflicted with bronchiolitis obliterans, that the harmful effects of diacetyl were discovered.

What Is Popcorn Lung?

Bronchiolitis obliterans is an inflammation of the bronchioles of the lungs. The lungs are a pair of powerful organs responsible for the intake of oxygen in the body. Oxygen passes from the windpipe into the tree branch-like bronchi and from there into bronchioles. When the bronchioles become inflamed, individuals can experience fits of coughing and difficulty breathing. Popcorn lung can cause permanent scarring of the bronchioles and severely impact the cycle of oxygen in and out of the body. Additionally, popcorn lung can lead to weight loss, fatigue, chest pain, and symptoms similar to those caused by the flu.

Currently, there is no known cure for popcorn lung, but there are treatment options that can help to alleviate its symptoms. Some medications can help to reduce inflammation in the lungs. If a patient has difficulty getting sufficient oxygen, an oxygen tank or breathing apparatus might be used. More severe cases of popcorn lung require a lung transplant, but this can sometimes cause further incidents of bronchiolitis obliterans.

The side effects of popcorn lung can be serious and permanent. Jed Dietrich, Esq. is recognized as a New York Super Lawyer and is adept at tackling personal injury cases on behalf of his clients. What Causes Popcorn Lung?

Diacetyl The role of diacetyl in cases of bronchiolitis obliterans was first discovered when microwave popcorn factory workers came down with the disease. Although it is a chemical, diacetyl is naturally found in certain dairy products, as well, in particular butter. Manufactures of microwave popcorn desired to mimic this natural flavoring and incorporated it into their products. Factory workers who breathed in the chemical on a daily basis developed bronchiolitis obliterans, which led to the colloquial term ‘popcorn lung.’

In addition to diacetyl, there are other chemicals that are known to be harmful to the lungs that can lead to cases of bronchiolitis obliterans. Two of these chemicals, chlorine and ammonia, are commonly found in household cleaning products. To learn more about harmful household chemicals, see our webpage. In some cases, popcorn lung can result from complications following surgery, including lung transplants and bone marrow transplants.

Who Is At Risk For Popcorn Lung?

Diacetyl has since been removed from most microwave popcorn recipes, but it has recently been discovered in e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes, also known as e-cigs and vapes, produce nicotine-laced smoke that can be inhaled. While they have been branded as a healthier alternative to cigarettes, e-cigarettes are still too new on the market to really know the full impact of their use. Currently, e-cigarette companies are under review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to determine whether to ban the inclusion of diacetyl in their products. Individuals who use e-cigarettes are potentially at risk for developing popcorn lung.
