They can be external or internal in origin, beginning as cancer in another part of the body that then spreads to the bone or as a blood cancer deep in the marrow of the bone.

What Is Bone Cancer?

According to the American Cancer Society, bone cancers are predominantly caused by gene mutations. Gene mutations occur over the course of an individual’s lifetime, sometimes as a result of exposure to harmful chemicals. These mutations can lead to the development of cancer in the body. Cancers that begin in the bones are known as primary bone tumors or sarcomas. Sarcomas can develop in any part of the bone’s anatomy and anywhere in the body. There are many types of sarcomas currently known. The three most common are:

  1. Osteosarcoma: Originating in the cells of the bone, this type of cancer typically affects individuals between 10 and 30 years-old. Women are more likely to develop osteosarcoma than men;
  2. Chondrosarcoma: This cancer develops in cartilage cells. It is often seen in the arms, legs, and pelvic bones, although it can grow in any part of the body; and
  3. Ewing Tumor: Very common in individuals under the age of 30, it is typically found in the chest, pelvis, arms, and legs.

Causes And Symptoms

Bone cancer is most often caused by other cancers. Known as metastatic cancer, it results when preexisting cancer reaches an advanced stage and spreads to other parts of the body. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma are two types of cancer that affect the bones but do not originate in them. Bone cancer can also originate as a blood cancer from the cells inside the bone marrow. Multiple myeloma, leukemia, and some lymphomas are blood cancers that can begin in the bone marrow.

While the exact cause of bone cancer is not definitively known, there are certain risk factors that can increase an individual’s chances of developing bone cancer. These can be inherited genetic disorders that cause deformities in the bone, such as multiple exostoses, or disorders that develop later in life, such as Paget disease. Radiation and bone marrow transplants are also potential risk factors.

The symptom most commonly associated with bone cancer is pain. Pain is the body’s way of communicating that something is not right. Persistent or worsening pain is one possible indication of the presence of bone cancer. Often the pain is worse at night. Swelling sometimes indicates the presence of a tumor. In some cases, the pain that accompanies bone cancer can be mistaken for arthritis, as both afflictions can cause pain and swelling in the body. If you believe your symptoms are possibly a sign of bone cancer, it is always prudent to seek out a medical evaluation to be certain.

Treatment And Recovery

When it comes to treating bone cancer, surgery is the most common treatment method. Depending upon the size of the tumor and how extensively the cancer has spread, amputation might be necessary. Amputation, taken from the Latin verb “amputatus,” meaning “to prune or cut away,” refers to the process of permanently removing a digit or limb. While it is not always necessary to perform an amputation of a cancerous area, individuals diagnosed with bone cancer should be aware that it is a possibility. Radiation, chemotherapy, and targeted drug therapy are all treatment methods for bone cancer.

As with all cancer treatments, a period of rest and rehabilitation will be necessary following a successful bone cancer treatment. If surgery was performed, a patient would likely need to complete a course of physical therapy to strengthen weakened parts of the body or to become accustomed to living with an amputation or prosthetic limb.
