What Is Bladder Cancer?

The bladder is one of the seven major organs in the human body. It performs the necessary function of storing urine until the body is ready to expel it. An adult bladder is capable of holding between sixteen and thirty-two ounces of liquid at a time, although anything above sixteen ounces will start to feel uncomfortable. Cancer is defined as the irregular and unchecked growth of cells in the human body. When this happens in the bladder, it becomes the first stage of bladder cancer. If left untreated, these cancerous cells can grow into tumors and even move to other parts of the body.

There are five main types of bladder cancer. Urothelial carcinoma is the most common, and fortunately, the least aggressive type of bladder cancer. The remaining four are rarely seen but also more life-threatening. The five types of bladder cancer are:

  1. Urothelial Carcinoma: The inside layer of the bladder is called the urothelium. This is the earliest stage of bladder cancer and the most common. It is regarded to be a non-invasive cancer because it has not yet spread to the other layers of the bladder;
  2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Squamous cells are found throughout the body and are common in cases of skin cancer, throat cancer, and cervical cancer. This type of cancer is invasive, meaning that it spreads quickly through the body;
  3. Adenocarcinoma: A gland-based cancer similar to colon cancer or breast cancer; this is a rare occurrence in the bladder. As with squamous cell carcinomas, it is invasive and requires aggressive treatment;
  4. Small Cell Carcinoma: A fast-growing but uncommon form of bladder cancer, it affects the neuroendocrine cells; and
  5. Sarcoma: The rarest form of bladder cancer, sarcomas grow in the muscle rather than the urothelial layer of the bladder.

Causes And Symptoms

One cause of bladder cancer is gene mutations. Gene mutations evolve in the body over the course of an individual’s life. They are different from heredity mutations, which are present in the body from birth. A gene mutation might result from exposure to tobacco smoke, radiation, or the cancer-causing chemicals known as carcinogens. Bladder cancer can be caused by hereditary gene mutations that are passed down from an individual’s parents, but this is less common.

Aside from genetic causes, there are risk factors that might increase an individual’s chances of developing bladder cancer. Smoking is one of the greatest causes of bladder cancer today. The chemicals present in tobacco are carcinogens. Individuals who regularly consume tobacco are more likely to develop bladder cancer, as well as other types of cancer. Other risk factors that can sometimes lead to bladder cancer are exposure to chemicals in the workplace, particularly those who work in the printing, dying, and hair styling industries. A history of urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and other infections of the bladder can increase an individual’s chances of developing bladder cancer.

The most prominent symptom of bladder cancer is the presence of blood in the urine. When mixed with blood, urine can turn orange or pink, but even in instances of bladder cancer, the urine sometimes appears normal in color for periods at a time. Cultivating an awareness of your urinary habits is the best way to tell when they become irregular. When the bladder is healthy, for instance, an individual has full control over when and how often they urinate. Another symptom of bladder cancer is the need to urinate frequently, sometimes with little to no warning. Urination can also be painful and accompanied by a burning sensation. Unfortunately, these symptoms are also common in urinary tract infections (UTIs) and might be mistaken for one.

More severe symptoms of bladder cancer can develop when it spreads to other parts of the body. These symptoms can include a sudden inability to urinate, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and swollen feet. We all want to keep our loved ones safe, but sometimes the unthinkable occurs. When that happens, the last thing we want is to worry about what action steps we need to take. Treating Bladder Cancer

As with all types of cancer, the treatment method for bladder cancer depends upon the stage of the disease and the location of any tumors. The standard of cancer care is chemotherapy and radiation, which are used to shrink the tumor and kill off cancer cells. For the early stages of bladder cancer, a transurethral resection (TURBT) is often performed. The TURBT is used to evaluate how far the cancer has spread and to remove tumors from inside the bladder. If chemotherapy and radiation are unsuccessful in removing the tumor, a cystectomy might be necessary to remove part or all of the bladder.

The five-year survival rate for bladder cancer is quite high: nearly 90%. This means that, on average, individuals diagnosed with bladder cancer have a 90% chance of living for five years, compared with someone not diagnosed with cancer. It is more common in men than in women and is most frequently seen in individuals who are between the ages of 55 and 75.
