Irrespective of whether your implants were for reconstructive or purely cosmetic reasons, there is a modest but significant risk of developing breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). BIA-ALCL is a type of cancer that attacks the immune system and can spread throughout the entire body. This type of cancer is life-threatening and requires urgent implant and scar removal surgery. Research has determined that textured silicone breast implants are roughly 400 times more likely to cause BIA-ALCL than smooth implants. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of women have Allergan breast implants. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), over 80 percent of all of the women suffering from BIA-ALCL worldwide had Allergan implants at the time of diagnosis. Consequently, the FDA has issued a recall on various Allergan breast implants and tissue expanders. If you, or a loved one, have Allergan’s recalled breast implants, you should not have to suffer in silence. Our experienced attorneys highly recommend consulting a board-certified plastic surgeon as soon as possible.

How Is BIA-ALCL Diagnosed? It is crucial for women with breast implants to report any changes in the appearance or size of their breasts to their doctor and schedule a full physical exam. Routine breast X-rays and mammograms are unable to accurately detect BIA-ALCL. If your doctor suspects you have cancer, he or she may refer you to an oncologist. Oncologists are physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating cancer. Your oncologist may schedule one or more of the following diagnostic procedures, including:
- Ultrasound or Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Imaging diagnostic tests are implemented to identify any swelling of lymph nodes or lumps and fluid accumulation in the breasts.
- Needle Biopsy: If imaging diagnostics detect excess fluid or mass, a fine-needle biopsy will be carried out. This type of biopsy is used to retrieve a sample of the fluid from the breast area. The fluid sample is then analyzed further at a laboratory.
- CD30 Immune Staining: This laboratory test is used to evaluate the fluid accumulation to identify the presence of CD30. When T-cell lymphocytes are activated, the substance CD30 comes about naturally. In cases where CD30 is present, it is a strong indication that the victim may be suffering from BIA-ALCL.
As with any type of cancer, early diagnosis of BIA-ALCL offers the greatest likelihood of a favorable outcome. Generally, victims of BIA-ALCL must have both their implants and scar tissue removed in a procedure called explant surgery. Advanced sufferers may require radiotherapy or chemotherapy, as well.
