What You Need to Know About Depo-Provera and Meningiomas

A meningioma is a central nervous system tumor that can form in the meninges.

Your meninges are protective membranes that surround your brain and your spinal cord. They shield your central nervous system from trauma and facilitate a wide range of other functions, including cerebrospinal fluid production and the release of special immune cells called macrophages.

Meningiomas can form almost anywhere in or around the meninges.

The Symptoms of a Meningioma

Meningiomas are sometimes described as “brain tumors,” but they do not form inside the brain or on its surface. However, depending on their size and shape, meningiomas can exert enough pressure on your brain to induce serious symptoms.

Common meningioma symptoms include:

1. Visual disturbances;
2. Headaches that worsen over time;
3. Hearing loss;
4. Tinnitus, or a “ringing in the ears”;
5. Memory loss;

The 3 Grades of Meningioma Tumors

The severity of a meningioma is usually determined by its grade and location. Most meningiomas fall into one of the following three categories:

1. Grade I meningiomas. Most grade 1 meningiomas are benign, meaning that they are noncancerous. These tumors grow slowly and they often have very distinct borders, making them easier to identify and, in many cases, easier to treat.
2. Grade II meningiomas. Grade 2 meningiomas are atypical, in that they are neither benign nor cancerous. Instead, they are comprised of unusual cells that may become malignant later in treatment. Many of these tumors grow rapidly and may reappear after being surgically removed.
3. Grade III meningiomas. Grade 3 meningiomas are cancerous. They are aggressive, in that they spread very quickly, resist most forms of conventional treatment, and can invade the parts of the brain adjoining the tumor.

Meningioma treatment typically depends on a confluence of different factors, including:

1. The size and location of the tumor;
2. The aggressive of the tumor; and
